American Plan vs housekeeping on Lake of the Woods

The difference in one line

On an American Plan, meals are inside the package price. On a housekeepingplan, you cook for yourself in a cabin kitchen. Everything else — boats, fuel, guides, tax — varies lodge by lodge on both plans, which is why two packages with the same plan label can still be nothing alike.

That last part is the part most comparisons skip, so it is what the rest of this page is about.

What each plan actually includes

Here are two real inclusion lists, quoted from the lodges’ own rate pages as we read them on 22 July 2026. Both are summarised in our own words in the catalogue; the wording below is ours, the facts are theirs.

Read those two rows next to each other and the real distinction shows up: the American Plan package is buying you a day on the water— the boat, the gas, the transport, the meals — while the housekeeping package is buying you a place to stay, with the fishing logistics left to you.

The same cabin, two plans

The cleanest way to see what the meal plan is worth is a lodge that sells both. Indianhead Lodge offers a seven-night non-guided housekeeping plan and a seven-night non-guided American Plan, and as we read its rate page on 22 July 2026 the two packages describe the same underlying trip: a two-bedroom cabin, an 18-foot boat and 25 litres of gas per day.

The housekeeping package lists a kitchen, a fireplace and a propane barbecue, and excludes meals and taxes. The American Plan package lists all meals, and excludes taxes and gratuity. Same lodge, same boat, same fuel allowance — the plan choice is genuinely about who cooks.

What the package price still doesn’t cover

“All-inclusive” is a marketing word, not a plan type. On the American Plan packages we have catalogued, the most common exclusions are the two that cost real money:

• Guide fees. Crow Rock Lodge and Obabikon Bay Camp both list guiding as excluded from their American Plan packages. A plan that includes every meal can still not include a guide.
• Tax. Grassy Narrows Lodge lists 13% Ontario tax as excluded from its American Plan; Indianhead Lodge and Obabikon Bay Camp both list tax as excluded too. On a multi-night package for a party of four, that is not a rounding error.

There are subtler variants. Obabikon Bay Camp sells its American Plan in two forms — one with a resort boat, one where you bring your own and boat, motor and gasoline drop out of the included list. Grassy Narrows Lodge excludes fuel for a personal boat even on the plan that includes fuel for a rented one.

This is exactly the gap the True Trip Cost calculator exists to close: it starts from a package’s stated price and adds the licences, fuel, groceries, gratuity and tax the brochure price leaves out, showing every assumption it makes and leaving a genuinely unbounded cost visibly unbounded rather than inventing a number for it.

The plans in between, and the ones that say nothing

American Plan and housekeeping are not the only two options on the lake. Of the 78 packages we had catalogued across 25 Lake of the Woods properties as of 22 July 2026:

Modified American Planusually means some meals, not all — often breakfast and dinner at the lodge with lunch on the boat. Ballard’s Resort, for instance, prices its multi-day guided package in two tiers depending on whether meals are included at all.

The last row is the honest one. For 14 packages, the lodge’s own page did not state a plan type plainly enough for us to record one, so we record nothing. We do not guess it from the price, the cabin description or what similar lodges offer. If you filter our listings by plan, those packages will not appear — a filter here never quietly promotes an unknown into a match, which is why a plan filter shows you fewer lodges than the lake actually has.

Which plan suits your trip

There is no better plan, only a better fit, and the deciding factors are usually these:

• Who is in the party. A crew that wants to fish dawn to dusk and not think about groceries is buying an American Plan. A group with a cook in it, or with kids on their own schedule, usually does better in a housekeeping cabin.
• How you get there. A boat-in or fly-in housekeeping cabin means every meal for the week has to travel with you. Drive-in properties make self-catering far easier.
• What you actually want to compare. A housekeeping headline price is not comparable to an American Plan headline price, because one of them has a week of food still to be added. Comparing them like for like is a true-trip-cost question, not a rate-page question.
